New Teacher is an episode in the Hey Arnold! TV Series.
Summary
Miss Slovak is retiring from teaching, because she wants to become a professional golfer, and Mr. Simmons becomes the new fourth grade teacher. Mr. Simmons is very sensitive and has a "be your own unique self" teaching method, which bores the students. He also encourages the students to always ask "Why?" Eventually the students rebel against Mr. Simmons, and eventually break him and he quits. However, their next teacher, Mr. Goose, or Lieutenant Major Goose, is a strict disciplinarian who teaches with a strict military "One unit" method. The students now realize how good they had it with Mr. Simmons, and they try to apologize to him, but Mr. Simmons is not convinced. However, after they prove that they've learned what he's tried to teach them, he reconsiders. The students then gang up on Goose, bombarding him with the "Why?" questions that Mr. Simmons encouraged, and eventually he is overwhelmed and quits. But the students are delighted when Mr. Simmons returns to teach fourth grade again.

- The 4th grade class in this episode is made up of Arnold, Gerald, Helga, Harold, Phoebe, Rhonda, Sheena, Nadine, Brainy, Stinky, Iggy, and Curly. However, Eugene and Park do not appear. Sid on the other hand only appears when exiting the school at the main door and playing the bongos at Mr. Simmons's house.
- Mr. Simmons likes gardening.
- The poem that Mr. Simmons reads in class is a parody of William Carlos Williams' poem, This is Just to Say.
- Gerald's poem is similar to Alan Ginsberg's Howl.
- Harold's last name (Berman) is revealed, as is Curly's first name (Thaddeus).
- Lieutenant Major Goose also appears in the episode "Veterans Day".
- Walter Charles Walter was a parody of a poet William Carlos Williams
- When the students question Lieutenant Major Goose why are certain things so, Curly says, "Why do fools fall in love?" This is a reference to "Why Do Fools Fall in Love" by Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers.
- Arnold is noticeably out of character for the first part of the episode; going along with the plan to get rid of Mr. Simmons. It is not until after Mr. Simmons quits that he realizes the error of his ways.
- When Helga has on the truth crown and insults Arnold, the entire class laughs, even Arnold.
Goofs
- The beginning scene where Principal Wartz announces Miss Slovak has retired reuses a few shots from "Tutoring Torvald".
- When Helga and the other kids have made their plan to get rid of Mr. Simmons, Helga asks "Everyone know the drill?" and they all put their hands together to make a pact and each say they do. Arnold's hand suddenly pops into frame and you can hear him say "Alright", but Arnold wasn't in the scene with them.
- There is no such rank as "Lieutenant Major" anywhere in the U.S. Military.
- Lieutenant Major Goose says "oh-ten-hundred-hours". There's no such time. "Ten hundred hours" without the "oh" means 10:00 AM; "oh-nine-hundred-hours" means 9:00 AM.
- When Lieutenant Major Goose was confused, all the students were laughing, except for Arnold, but in another shot he is shown to be laughing as well.
