Before the main series was launched, Craig Bartlett created three clay animation short films:

• Arnold Escapes From Church (1988)
• The Arnold Waltz (1990)
• Arnold Rides His Chair (1991)

They featured three characters of the show: Arnold, Helga, and Harold.

• The shorts were given the nickname "Clay Arnold!", though this title was never used in production.
